Petrochemical Application - China Fleyenda Actuated Valve Manufacturer

Petrochemical Application

The environment in petrochemical plants is extremely harsh, with operating conditions often involving high temperatures and pressures, toxic and hazardous materials, flammable and explosive substances, extensive and long production chains, and continuous operations. Valves are ubiquitous, from the transportation of petroleum products to the storage and control of hazardous chemicals. Wisely choosing petrochemical valves can minimize downtime, maintain system integrity, and prevent leaks.

Part Ⅱ 5 Common Types of Petrochemical Valves

The petrochemical industry uses various valves, each designed to meet specific purposes. Here, we mainly introduce 5 common types of valves in the petrochemical industry.

1. Petrochemical Ball Valves: These have excellent shut-off capabilities and control flow through a quarter turn. Fleyenda offers anti-static structures ensuring continuity between the valve body, ball, and stem, and fire-safe ball valves that maintain a certain level of sealing performance even when the elastic sealing material is damaged by fire.

2. Petrochemical Butterfly Valves: Suitable for large diameter applications and lightweight.

- Double-offset butterfly valves are mainly used for controlling and protecting pipeline systems, such as oil transportation, chemical material preparation, and storage and transportation of acid and alkaline solutions. The design of double-offset butterfly valves significantly reduces excessive squeezing and scraping between the disc and the seat, improving sealing performance and service life.

- Triple-Offset Butterfly Valves: These can be used as shut-off valves in emergency situations and offer lower costs and better durability compared to other types of valves. Additionally, triple-offset butterfly valves perform excellently in the temperature control loop of reactor cooling water in high-pressure polyethylene units, providing stable regulation and complete disconnection during interlocking.

3. Petrochemical Gate Valves:  These offer full flow capacity, making them ideal for on-off services. They are typically used in applications requiring full open or full close positions to ensure free flow or complete isolation of the medium. Their robust construction and reliable performance make them suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature environments, especially for handling clean fluids and non-corrosive media.

4. Petrochemical Knife Gate Valves: Designed to cut through viscous substances like oil and other thick fluids easily. They are suitable for use in medium to low-pressure pipelines.

5. Petrochemical Globe Valves: These are widely used and provide precise throttling control. Globe valves can only operate in one direction, so proper installation is crucial. They are used for stopping and starting flow with high precision, effectively regulating many pipeline systems. Such valves are commonly used for the control and transportation of petroleum, fuels, and chemicals in the petrochemical industry. Their flexible design and easy maintenance make them ideal for this industry. They are designed to ensure no leakage or bubbles over thousands of cycles.

Understanding the characteristics and functions of these valves is essential to selecting the appropriate valve based on the intended application and system requirements.

Part Ⅲ How to Choose the Right Petrochemical Valve

1. Petrochemical Valve Application Environment and Medium
In the petrochemical industry, valves are used to control various types of fluids such as liquids, gases, steam, slurry, suspensions, and viscous liquids. These fluids may contain solid particles, dust, and chemicals. Therefore, it is essential to understand the properties of the fluid when selecting a valve, such as whether it contains solid suspensions, if the liquid will vaporize, if the gas will liquefy, and the corrosiveness of the fluid. The corrosiveness of a mixture of different substances can be entirely different from that of individual components, requiring special attention.

2. Petrochemical Valve Materials
Once the pressure, temperature rating, and fluid characteristics of the valve are determined, suitable materials should be selected. Different parts of the valve, such as the body, bonnet, disc, and seat, may be made from various materials to achieve the best economic and durable results. Cast iron valve bodies are allowed up to 200℃. Steel valve bodies can be used up to 425℃. For temperatures exceeding 425℃, alloy steel materials should be considered. For temperatures exceeding 550℃, high-temperature-resistant Cr-Ni stainless steel materials are usually selected. For valves transporting chemically corrosive media, materials like stainless steel, Monel alloy, plastic, or corrosion-resistant linings should be used according to the nature of the medium.

3. Petrochemical Valve Standards
- American Petroleum Institute (API)
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
- National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE)
- Manufacturers Standardization Society of the Valve and Fittings Industry (MSS)
- British Standards (BS)

In addition to the above considerations, it is essential to consider the valve's functionality, type, and economic aspects comprehensively. Through systematic analysis and rational selection, valves can operate efficiently, safely, and reliably in the petrochemical industry. We also provide actuators and instruments that are compatible with our control valves.
